FAQ

What happens in therapy?

This is a time that is totally focused on you. Your thoughts, your concerns, your joy, your sorrow, your relationships, your struggles. The answers often reside within you and through the process of psychotherapy, answers and direction frequently emerge.

Why do people wait until their lives are in shambles before they seek help?

There seems to be a built in human defense mechanism that binds us to stay as we are, to not rock the boat. We seem to be addicted to the "status quo" out of fear of the unknown, even if our current situation is miserable.

What are some common fears or things people say when they are avoiding psychotherapy?

I can do this on my own.
I don't want to air my dirty laundry.
I'm scared to let anyone know my deep, dark secrets.
I'm afraid of what I might find if I look inside. I might loose myself.
Therapy is only for "crazies" or weak people.
Each of these comments are perfectly natural and at the same time fear based. It
takes real courage and strength to seek help. It does take a leap of faith to question anything beyond the surface of our lives, and yet that leap of faith may bring ultimate freedom that is truly liberating. This liberating freedom can pave the way for healthy relationships and authentic living.

It is our interior life that dictates the way we live our lives, and whether we are by ourselves, in a relationship, or a family or community this interior life profoundly impacts the quality of our lives. Richard Tarnas, Ph.D. says, "the deep dispositions of our entire life fully permeate and configure our understanding of the entire cosmos."
